The urbanization of the world is happening at an unprecedented speed in the human history. According to the United Nation’s projection, in 2050 (B.E. 2593) the world population live in cities will rise to around 75% of the total population as against 50% in 2006 and 10% in 1900. The majority of the urban population will concentrate in many mega cities of several million people across the globe. A number of mega cities will have more than 10 million population. In the emerging countries with fine economic growth such as Thailand, there are urgent needs to improve their decaying cities and insufficient infrastructure and to plan and design for the future massive influx of rural population. Urban designers, architects, landscape architects, city planners will all have their roles in creating a better man-made environment for their respective countries.
In Thailand, cities such as Bangkok, Chiangmai, Korat, Haadyai are fast growing in population and economy. The number of international tourists coming to resort coastal cities such as Phuket and Pattaya is rapidly increasing. The result is the construction of high-rise buildings, residential projects, shopping complex, and hotels which is taking places all around these major cities. However, they are implemented without comprehensive urban planning and well-coordinated urban design. The public offices are trying to cope with the rapid urban growth with insufficient budget and resources which result in environmental degradation, crime, and low quality of urban lifestyle.
The Thai Urban Designers Association (TUDA) was established in January 2003 to comply with the Architects Act B.E. 2543. TUDA is relatively new and the urban design profession is not yet well known in Thai society. TUDA aims to promote and develop the urban design profession and knowledge in anticipation of the globalization of massive urban expansion. TUDA will publicize and provide knowledge, information, and understanding of urban design to be known and accepted by the public and the different government organizations; thus help pushing the urban design profession into practice and implementation for the result of better design of cities and their environment.
TUDA will cooperate and support the activities of the Architect Council of Thailand. It will coordinate and build strong tie with other architectural design associations in Thailand and similar professional association abroad especially in APEC and ASEAN countries. It will work with educational institutions, government offices, and trade and business associations, both local and foreign. It will keep its members in unity and well-informed with regular newsletter, luncheon and dinner talks, seminars and training, and will encourage their participation with the association’s activities. It has its own website in English and brochures to promote the association and is poised to become an important professional association.
